Radon is a radioactive gas released from the normal decay of uranium, thorium and radium in rocks and soil. You cannot see it- it is odorless, tasteless and invisible. Radon can only be detected by specialized Radon detectors. Radon can enter homes through cracks in floors, walls or foundations and collect indoors. Radon decays quickly and can be present in ground water but is most dangerous when inhaled. Long term exposure to Radon can lead to lung cancer, in fact Radon exposure is the second main cause of lung cancer nationally after smoking.
